Nate was a good dude. Always liked him.
A news release noted that Allen, the department's first black deputy chief, served in a variety of roles since joining KPD in 1986, including East District commander, staff officer to the police chief, homeland security coordinator and commander of the Criminal Investigations Division.
He left to become police chief in Decatur, Ala., which is near Huntsville. It has a population of about 56,000.
"Chief Allen has been instrumental throughout his career in building positive relationships with Knoxville's many diverse communities," said Knoxville Police Chief, David Rausch in a released statement.
